A DISCUSSION ON FEDERAL POLITICAL SOLUTION - DEVOLUTION OF POWER

On May 21, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., a significant discussion on the devolution of power took place in the Batticaloa-Miani assembly hall. The event was organized by our AHAM Humanitarian Resource Center, in collaboration with the Northeast Coordination Committee. The objective of this discussion was to explore the concept of devolving power and its potential implications. Various stakeholders from diverse backgrounds actively participated, sharing their perspectives and insights on the matter. The session proved to be an enlightening platform for fostering dialogue and understanding regarding the decentralization of power.

A DISCUSSION ON FEDERAL POLITICAL SOLUTION - DEVOLUTION OF POWER

A "political solution" is imperative to address the longstanding national ethnic problem in the North East of Sri Lanka, which has persisted for 70 years. To shed light on this issue, a 100-day campaign titled "Political Solution with Dignified Rights for the People of the North East" was held last year on August 1, 2022. The campaign took place across eight districts of the North East provinces, and its culmination occurred on November 8, 2022, in those same districts.

On the 100th and final day of the campaign, the people of the North East united and voiced their message through the People's Declaration to the Sri Lankan nation and the global community. Their emphatic demand was for a "collective devolution of power to a unified North Eastern Province within the United Sri Lanka" as an irrevocable political solution.

To engage with various stakeholders and provide further clarity on the political solution, the North East Coordination Committee initiated discussions with university students, media professionals, youth representatives, religious leaders, academicians, opinion makers, human rights activists, civil organizations, and politicians from the North East Provinces.

Despite national and international efforts to provide clarifications, the first phase of these discussions was held on May 14, 2023, at the Trincomalee Municipality Assembly Hall, with support from the Internal Humanitarian Resource Center. The event, chaired by Mr. Kandumani Lavakusarasa, Coordinator of the North East Coordination Committee and the AHAM Humanitarian Resource Center, witnessed the active participation of 107 individuals, including Trincomalee students from Eastern University, civil organization representatives, and youths from the Trincomalee district.

THAMPALAKAMAM VILLAGERS FACE DISRUPTION AS HEAVY RAINS DAMAGE HOMES

Over the past few days, Trincomalee has been experiencing heavy rainfall, which has disrupted the daily activities of many villagers. The Assistant Director of Disaster Management at Trincomalee District Disaster Management has stated that compensation allowances will be given to the affected victims through the Divisional Secretariat Report.

Women's Protest against ATA

On April 20, 2023, the Northeast Women's Collective organized a peaceful protest in front of the Trincomalee Municipal Council, voicing their opposition to the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA). Women from different walks of life participated in the vigil, holding placards with powerful slogans protesting the ATA.

The Northeast Women's Collective is a grassroots organization that has been working tirelessly to promote gender equality and human rights in the region. The ATA has come under scrutiny for its potential to be used to violate human rights, particularly against vulnerable communities and minorities.

The women's protest in Trincomalee is part of a larger movement calling for the repeal of the ATA. The protesters are urging the government to prioritize the protection of human rights and civil liberties, rather than compromising them in the name of security.

The Northeast Women's Coalition, along with other civil society organizations, will continue to advocate for the repeal of the ATA and work towards a more just and equal society where human rights are respected and protected.
