MAHIYANGANA RELIEF PROGRAM

The distribution of relief packages to senior tribal people in Dambana village, located in the Mahiyangana Divisional Secretariat of Badulla District, commenced on July 15, 2022, at 10:30 am. The operation was blessed by the chief of the tribal people in the area, and a total of 550 families from the village were provided with dry food packages.

The primary occupations of the rural people in the area are honey extraction, hunting, and farming. Unfortunately, 90% of the population is illiterate, but the current generation is attending school and pursuing their education.

The women living in the village are engaged in gardening, while the men focus on the other primary occupations. Despite having residential land and agricultural land, farming and gardening are only possible during the rainy season. As a result, food scarcity is a prevalent issue among the population.

Women in the village have reported experiencing extreme poverty due to a lack of fertilizer supply in the past, leading to low agricultural yields and food shortages. Many women must resort to wage labor to provide for their families and expressed concern over the low wages they receive.

Additionally, betel nut usage is prevalent in the village among people of all ages, and the daily expense for this habit ranges between Rs. 150 to Rs. 200. This habit has become an integral part of their daily lives.

The relief package distribution organized by the Asian Human Rights Commission is an essential initiative that will support the rural community's food security and alleviate their daily struggles. The AHRC recognizes the challenges faced by vulnerable communities in the area and will continue to work towards promoting their human rights and supporting their livelihoods.

EMERGENCY RELIEF PROGRAM FOR AFFECTED PEOPLE

In an effort to provide relief to vulnerable communities in the region, the AHAM Humanitarian Resource center (AHRC) carried out a relief work operation in the Kadatkaraichenai village at around 8:00 am. The initiative was a collaborative effort between the AHRC, the Village Development Association, the Woman Village Development Association, and civil activists.

Initially, 25 people belonging to the villages of Kataparichan and Kadatsenai were provided with relief materials. Following this, 200 people from 13 villages including Iralkuzhi, Jinnanagar, Pattithidal, Marudanagar, Munnampodivedai, Srinarayanapuram, Kumarapuram, Vattavan, Mavadichenai, Senaiyur, Peramaduva, Arafanagar, and Alangeni were given 10 Kg of rice and 2 bars of soap each.

The selection of people for the relief work was carried out by the Village Development Association, Woman Village Development Association, and civil activists. Families who were economically affected, women-headed households, and those who were affected by a lack of wage labor were prioritized for assistance.

The AHRC's relief work operation has provided essential support to communities affected by various crises in the region. By working in collaboration with local organizations and community leaders, the AHRC has been able to identify and prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable individuals and families. The initiative has helped to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the pandemic and other crises and promote resilience in the face of adversity.

PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS.

The AHAM Humanitarian Resource Center (AHRC) has provided an agricultural well to support the development of sustainable livelihoods in a local community. The well was installed to provide reliable access to water for agriculture, which is a critical component of sustainable rural livelihoods.

The AHRC's initiative to provide an agricultural well will help to improve the local community's access to water for irrigation, leading to increased crop yields and food security. This will also promote sustainable livelihoods and support the local economy by providing a reliable source of income for farmers.

The AHRC's initiative to provide an agricultural well is a great example of how human rights can be promoted through sustainable development practices. By empowering local communities and supporting their livelihoods, the AHRC is helping to ensure that basic human rights, such as access to water and food, are met. This in turn will lead to increased well-being and improved quality of life for those in the community.

PARTICIPATORY RURAL ASSESSMENT - KINNIYA

The Participatory Rural Assessment (PRA) aims to foster relationships between elected officials, local journalists, and CSOs in promoting transparency and accountability in the eastern province of Sri Lanka. The PRA team has prepared a village survey plan and is collecting data based on participatory village surveys.

The goal of the PRA is to engage with the local community and allow them to have an active voice in the development of their own communities. By using a participatory approach, the PRA team seeks to empower the community by involving them in the decision-making process and helping them identify and prioritize their own needs.

The data collected through the village surveys will be used to inform policy decisions and planning processes, with a focus on promoting transparency and accountability among elected officials and other stakeholders. By working together, the PRA team hopes to build trust between local communities and those in positions of power, leading to more effective and sustainable development outcomes.

MEDIA AWARENESS PROGRAM

The Media Awareness Program was designed to educate and inform local journalists and civil activists about the United Nations systems and the related work of the AHRC. The program aimed to raise awareness of human rights issues and the role that the AHRC plays in addressing them.

Through the program, participants were provided with a comprehensive understanding of the United Nations and its functions, as well as the various human rights mechanisms and instruments available to them. They were also introduced to the work of the AHRC, including its mandate, areas of focus, and ongoing initiatives.

The program was a valuable opportunity for local journalists and civil activists to enhance their knowledge of human rights and to engage with the AHRC in a meaningful way. By promoting greater awareness and understanding of human rights issues, the program helped to strengthen advocacy efforts and contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights in the local community.
