HUMAN RIGHT WORKSHOP FOR VILLAGE LEVEL CBOs

Marking the inauguration of AHRC's Strengthening of Traditional Village Level Organizations Program, the inaugural training workshop focusing on human rights and associated legislation took place this Tuesday, the 8th of August 2023. The venue for this informative gathering was the Miani Discussion Hall, Batticaloa. The workshop welcomed representatives hailing from village level organizations within the administrative purviews of Vaharai, Vaunatheevu, and Kiran Divisional Secretariats.

 

On this significant occasion, Mr. Isaideen, the Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission for Trincomalee and Batticaloa District, played a pivotal role as the designated resource person. His contribution encompassed a comprehensive presentation on human rights, serving to enlighten and engage the attendees. This workshop stands as an important milestone within the context of fostering the Strengthening of Traditional Village Level Organizations Program initiated by AHRC.

 

DISCUSSION WITH DEMOCRATIC ACTORS – VAHARAI.

A discussion involving democratic stakeholders was convened as part of the "Developing a Forum for Democratic Actors in the Eastern Province" initiative, overseen by AHRC. The session took place on the 3rd of August 2023, commencing at 3:00 pm within the premises of Vaharai Pradeshiya Sabha Hall. Notable participants encompassed officials from Vaharai Pradeshiya Sabha, civil activists, media representatives, and young individuals. The discourse encompassed a wide array of topics, including pertinent regional development concerns. Among the key activities were elucidating the Regional Council's undertakings to the populace and presenting community demands to the Council.

Of particular significance, a proposal for the refurbishment of the bus stand located adjacent to the Pradesh Sabha was tendered. In line with our commitment to the welfare of the Vaharai community, our company presented a check amounting to Rs. 30,000 to facilitate the bus stop's reconstruction. The event was orchestrated by AHRC and was attended by essential personnel including the Deputy Coordinator, Project Coordinator, Assistant Accountant, and representatives of the aforementioned organization. This assembly occurs once every 45 days, fostering an ongoing dialogue among democratic actors in the region.

 

DISTRIBUTION OF DRY FOOD PACKETS TO FISHERMEN

In order to support the fishermen engaged in the shrimp fishing industry in Mudur Khataiparichan village and improve their livelihoods, AHRC (AHAM Humanitarian Resource Center) and PCCJ (Peoples Collectives for Climate Justice) organized an initiative with the financial support of the North-East Coordinating Committee. As part of this effort, on Friday (23), fishing equipment was provided to 40 fishermen.

The aim of the initiative was to encourage the fishermen and equip them with the necessary tools to enhance their fishing activities. The distribution of fishing equipment took place on Friday, and the recipients were able to receive their packages on Sunday (25).

By providing fishing equipment, AHRC and PCCJ aimed to empower the fishermen and contribute to the improvement of their livelihoods in the shrimp fishing industry. This initiative was made possible through the support and collaboration of the North-East Coordinating Committee.

 

EMPOWERING HORTICULTURE FARMERS FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS

AHRC, as part of its commitment to establishing sustainable livelihoods, has provided horticulture farmers with seeds through the Livelihood project. These seeds have enabled the beneficiaries to enhance their home gardens and cultivation practices, leading to improvements in their overall livelihoods.

WORKSHOP ON BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS FOR SINHALA YOUTH

The AHAM Humanitarian Resource Center (AHRC) organized two impactful workshops centered around the theme of Basic Human Rights, Reconciliation, and Social Communication specifically designed for Sinhalese youth. These workshops served as platforms for empowering and enlightening the younger generation on fundamental human rights principles and fostering a culture of understanding and harmony.

The first workshop was held on June 23, 2023, at the esteemed Morawewa Regional Secretariat Cultural Hall. It was a vibrant gathering that brought together Sinhalese youth eager to learn and grow. Alongside them, our dedicated company officers actively participated, emphasizing the significance of this event. The presence of Isaideen, the Coordinator of the Sri Lankan Human Rights Commission - Eastern Province, added immense value to the workshop. With his expertise and deep understanding of human rights, Isaideen passionately delivered a comprehensive explanation, illuminating the audience on the importance of upholding and protecting these fundamental rights.

Building on the success of the first workshop, the second workshop took place on June 24, 2023, in the Kandalai Region. This event specifically catered to the Sinhalese youth residing in the region, providing them with an invaluable opportunity to delve into the realm of human rights. With the aim of fostering greater awareness and empathy, the workshop explored themes of reconciliation and social communication alongside the core principles of human rights. Isaideen's participation in this event as a resource person was highly anticipated and greatly appreciated. He delivered an insightful and thought-provoking presentation, shedding light on the various dimensions of human rights and their relevance in our daily lives.

Both workshops served as transformative experiences for the participants, leaving a lasting impact on their understanding and appreciation of human rights. By equipping the Sinhalese youth with knowledge and awareness, these workshops aimed to empower them to become advocates for justice, equality, and harmony within their communities. The AHRC, along with its dedicated partners and collaborators, remains committed to fostering a society where human rights are upheld, reconciliation is prioritized, and social communication bridges the gaps that exist within our diverse society.
