Women's Day celebration in Mahiyangana area
On March 30th, in honor of International Women's Day, the AHAM Humanitarian Resource Center (AHRC) and the People's Collective for Climate Justice (PCCJ) organized a Women's Day event for tribal women living in Dambana village, located in the Mahiyangana Divisional Secretary Division of Sri Lanka. The event was attended by Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission Chairman Isaideen, AHRC Coordinator K. Lavakusarasa, Deputy Coordinator A. Madan, officials of PCCJ, and members of the public, including the tribal leader.
The event featured awareness-raising sessions focused on women's rights, as well as several competitions with prizes. The nature of the competitions was not specified. The mothers of the village prepared lunch for everyone in attendance, which added to the communal spirit of the day.
Many of the attendees expressed their happiness and joy, and it was clear that the day was a boon for the people of the village. Celebrations such as these are essential in promoting gender equality and women's empowerment."
