Visit of UN Resident Representative Mr. Marc-André Franche and OHCHR Team to AHRC

Date: 15.12.2023

Today, on the 15th of December 2023, Mr. Marc-André Franche, the United Nations Resident Representative for Sri Lanka, accompanied by a 10-member team of senior human rights officers from the OHCHR Division, visited our Aham Humanitarian Resource Center (AHRC) during their inaugural visit to the Eastern Province.

Representatives from our Eastern Province civil organizations, along with officials from AHRC, engaged in discussions with the visiting UN team.

During this meeting, evidence of human rights violations faced by the people of the Eastern Province, including issues such as land occupation, Buddhistization, militarization, challenges faced by war-affected individuals, and problems related to women, was presented to the Resident Representative and the UN delegation. We emphasized the importance of continued collaboration and contributions in addressing these challenges.

Mr. Marc-André Franche, the UN Resident Representative, expressed his commitment to discussing the issues faced by the people of the Eastern Province with the government. This commitment underscores the collaborative efforts between AHRC, civil organizations, and the United Nations in addressing and finding solutions to the human rights concerns in the region.

This meeting serves as a crucial step in advocating for the rights of the people in the Eastern Province, and we look forward to sustained dialogue and actions towards resolving these pressing issues.
