International Human Rights Day event - 2023

Date: 14.12.2023

On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, civil organizations, war-affected individuals, media representatives, and political leaders from the Eastern Province gathered to advocate for a lasting political solution to the enduring national issues faced by the Tamil-speaking community over three decades. The event took place at the Tannamunya Miani Conference Hall in the Batticaloa District.

The commemoration commenced at Thannamunai Miani, where war-affected individuals representing the three districts began their journey on foot, culminating at Miani Mandapam. The subsequent events included the release of a documentary film highlighting the land acquisitions experienced by Tamil and Muslim communities from Pothuvil to Tennaimaravadi, followed by a public discussion. Through this platform, the affected individuals expressed their views, urging a collective political solution to address their longstanding issues.

Notable attendees included Batticaloa District Member of Parliament Govindan Karunakaram, Karaitivu Preparatory Assembly Vice President Krisnapillai Jayasiril, Human Rights Activist Rukki Fernando, leaders of Disappeared Associations, and representatives from Regional Civil Activist Networks.

The event was jointly organized by the Aham Humanitarian Resource Center (AHRC), Civil Society, People's Collective for Climate Justice (PCCJ), and Women's Networks from Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Ampara Districts.
