Condolence Event and Training for the Association of Disappeared Persons

A solemn and informative two-day residential training course took place in Batticaloa on November 15-16, 2023, dedicated to the members of the Association of Disappeared Persons in Trincomalee and Batticaloa Districts in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.
The training course aimed to address critical topics such as the Act on Disappeared Persons, the ongoing operations of the Office of the Missing Persons, procedures for carrying out referrals, and an in-depth understanding of international structures including the United Nations Security Council, the International Criminal Court, and the United Nations Human Rights Council. Special emphasis was placed on the role of the association within these structures.
Conducted under the leadership of Velan Kumari, Project Coordinator of the initiative, the training was facilitated by AL Isaideen, Regional Coordinator of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission. Noteworthy contributors to the training included Mr. Kandumani Lavakusarasa, Coordinator of Aham Humanitarian Resource Center, and Deputy Coordinator Mr. Alakurasan Mathan.
This comprehensive training session not only provided valuable insights into legal frameworks and international mechanisms but also offered a platform for members to collectively reflect on their roles within the Association of Disappeared Persons. The event served as both a condolence gathering and an empowering educational initiative, highlighting the commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the community.
